Direct thermal or thermal transfer?
- Direct thermal (ZD421d) — prints on heat-sensitive labels, no ribbon needed. Lowest running cost; right for shipping labels, barcodes, and receipts that live under ~12 months.
- Thermal transfer (ZD421t) — prints with a ribbon for durable, long-life labels: asset tags, product ID, lab and outdoor applications. Also prints direct thermal when you need it to.

What's the difference between the ZD420 and ZD421?
The ZD421 replaced the ZD420 with a faster processor, more memory, newer radios (up to Wi-Fi 6E), and Print DNA software support. ZD420 labels, ribbons, and most accessories carry over.
Is the ZD421 compatible with my old GK420d labels?
Yes — same 4-inch media path. The ZD421d is the standard upgrade path for retired GK420d printers.
Do I need 203 or 300 dpi?
203 dpi handles shipping and general barcode labels. Choose 300 dpi when printing labels under ~1.5" wide, 2D codes at small sizes, or fine text.
